Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and noticed that the Software Updater does not prompt for a password after I click on install. Initially I thought it might have cached the password. However, today morning, I did a full start and it still did not ask me for the password. Is this some bug or as designed? (Unless my machine is being controlled by aliens ;) )

I noticed the same on 14.04 but you will find that some security updates do prompt for the password. This feature also applies to the latest xubuntu based on 14.04 .

Whether or not this is a bug remains to be seen.

Thanks Richard. It is kind of unsettling to have any updates/changes without the password after being used to the contrary all these years. I wonder why they changed it. But then I never understood why they moved to Unity either. Sigh.

I have not met one long term user of Linux who does like Unity but there again since I have retired I don't get to meet many Linux users.

P.S. I thought I had added a PS to my previous response with words to the effect that I hate Unity but it seems to have disappeared! Has someone objected to my use of the word 'hate' ?

It hasn't disappeared, you misremember the thread where you posted it. The right one is here https://coderanch.com/t/635303/Performance/java/Mysql-workbench-slow-change-os#2911540

FWIW, Unity is the reason I moved to LinuxMint from Ubuntu, around a year or more back.

Yes. I have been considering that for quite a while but I keep vacillating. Right now I am running with Gnome flashback, Compiz and cairo dock.

Over the last couple of years I have tried most Linux flavours and for about 6 months I did settle on Mint Xfce but after trying Xubuntu I decided I preferred it and switched over a few months back. I'm not sure my decision to switch was sensible and cannot really justify the use of Xubuntu rather than Mint. Since I can now install a Linux and migrate all my data in about half a day it does not matter too much which version I use and I shall try out the new versions as they become available.

Edit : I just noticed that the latest Mint Xfce which has long term support has recently been released so I shall install it as a Virtual Box instance.
