I know IT professionals are into caffeine but also I would like to know if they practice Vegetarian or Vegan way of life ? I know some IT people who are animal activists and vegans. How many Vegans/Vegetarians we have in this forum ? And how many are about to turn Vegetarian/Vegan ? I have no intention to start a debate over this topic. I am just curious to know.

##no offense to meat-eaters##

I suppose as the Meaningless Drivel forum is the home of ridiculous questions, I'll play along and cast my vote.

Does 'pulled' mean 'shredded'? If yes, that's a strange choice of words. I wonder why it came to be called pulled pork.

If you put the pulled pork in a pie you move into an older realm of poetry: alliteration.

A photo from last Christmas, my favorite food: Schweinshaxe!

Unfortunately, due to my high cholesterol, my doctor forbidden me to eat any meat or even drink my beloved wheat beer. I do not eat meat now, but I would not call myself a vegetarian, because... it does not change that I still love meat!!

IMHO, you need a new doctor. That's outdated, inaccurate information. The best thing you can do for high cholesterol is stop eating sugar and refined white flour. See here and here. I lowered my total cholesterol from 240+ to 190 while decreasing LDL and increasing HDL, all while eating red meat, eggs, and butter.
Here is another good article written by a heart surgeon.

Yes, the link between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol has been pretty much debunked. I think the FDA used the term "not a nutrient of concern" in its latest missive on dietary cholesterol.

I once heard it said as "don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food". Although, that's not perfect advice. Grandma used a lot of sugar. I still miss her fried apple pies....

Just today a vegan coworker brought in some vegan treats to celebrate her birthday -- Oreos, Nutter Butters, and Vienna Fingers. (She said she didn't have time to make anything homemade.) This was, of course, done with an arch sense of humor. The catchphrase in the office all morning has been "vegan doesn't mean 'healthy'" as we munch "vegan junk food."

Pulled pork: if you cooked it properly, you shred it by pulling the fibers apart with a pair of forks. Especially good as carnitas with the orange and spices.

Actually, I aim for a low-body-count carnivore myself. I tend to empathise with the animals{*] and actually meat doesn't always smell/taste good to me. Especially unseasoned meat. Forget raw. I was brought up on crunchy burnt things.

Veganism I could never understand. It's one thing not to want to make animals suffer, but cows unmilked are in pain and infertile chicken eggs left to rot do no one any good. And I can't feel that just because they have to "work for a living" that that makes them abused. After all, so do I.

* Except geese. Too bad I don't like roast goose. Nasty bad-tempered things!

Those are really nice articles, especially the [first one]. I am going to follow those recommendations. Thank you for providing the links!

About the discussion about the vegan diet. I think it can make a sense, but only when applied for a limited period of time. One of my best friends is almost 60 now, but she still looks like she would be maybe 35. She generally lives a healthy life. Does sports, teaching yoga as a hobby. From time to time she does a vegan diet, for a period of about one month (can be longer actually, don't really know). When she's not on the diet, she likes to eat with us Schweinshaxe as usual. I believe this way of living combined with dieting does her "35" effect.

I'd actually venture to guess that it's more genetics than diet, but I am not a medical professional, nor do I play one on TV.

I am not sure how many non vegetarian really cut the meat and eat.

I think real poll would be to check, how many cut the living pork, chicken, beef and then eat it ;-)

I m sure butcher does it everyday.

PS: I eat all edible things. I am above Halal/Haram/Kosher etc. No offence to any foodie.

I once figured out that depending on regional pronunciation, there's probably about 12 different ways to pronounce "pork", many of them based on how strongly (if at all) you pronounce the "r".

I think the carnivores have taken over, and I'll confess that some good pulled/BBQ pork or carnitas have been known to lure me in on occasion, but while I'm not a vegetarian, I do prefer to keep the body count down when I can. It would be easier except that these days, I have to go light on the carbs.

Veganism is something I just can't buy into. We've mutated a number of animals to the point where if they don't contribute, it hurts them. Chickens dropping sterile eggs to rot, cows in pain for lack of milking, and just this week a sheep made headlines because without having been sheared for several years it was buried in its own weight of wool. I don't know how it survived heatstroke.

I'm definitely not a vegetarian, but I have found myself picking vegetarian options more lately. I stay away from processed meats like ham and bacon, so mostly eat chicken and fish.

I'm probably not a typical software professional though, I don't drink caffeine or alcohol (purely through personal taste/preference).

I was once a vegetarian, but at that time I was a (part time) soldier - and was given the choice "meat or go away" [or something like that but in Army language!]
These days I eat meat, lots of it ;-) I see it as a healthy choice, together with a lot of fruit.

Things I try to avoid;
Processed food, too much sugar and salt.
Trans fats, processed meat that just not meat at all.
Sugar based drinks; coke, red bull and the like. Sugar content is seriously bad. Sugar Rush - Jamie Oliver
Milk; causes too many health issues.
I refuse halal meat, as I see the butchering process as cruel.

I am not a vegetarian, but I have reduced my intake of meat to only a few times a year.

To me, eating meat isn't the issue, the issue is the appalling conditions in which we rear them for our consumption, and I therefore refuse to eat meat unless the animal was reared in ethical conditions.

You do realise, don't you, that the majority of Halal meat in the West is actually from animals that are pre-stunned? I think all Halal meat in NZ is pre-stunned, and the majority of it in the UK is too.

I believe pre-stunning isn't allowed for kosher meat, so if you refuse halal meat, then you should also refuse kosher.

Anyway, if you are against eating meat where an animal has suffered cruelty, then you must surely also refuse to eat meat from animals that were factory farmed.

Ok, I think that is all I will say on this thread, as it is probably becoming more Rattlesnake Pit than Meaningless Drivel!
