I am looking to play some videos within Java. What are my best options to look into? I have a lot of flexibility with the file format of the videos to be played.

I've had some success in the past using VLCJ. You can find it here: http://capricasoftware.co.uk/#/projects/vlcj

You can use JavaFX, see for example Introduction to JavaFX Media.

I've once used VLCJ, which is a Java API for the libvlc library. If I had to do something with video now, I'd look at JavaFX first, however.

Thanks! I'll look into JavaFX right away. I saw a mention of transparency. Do you happen to know if it is possible to overlay one video on top of another? I'd love to be able to do a simple dissolve effect between videos.
