Yes it is worth if you are planning to go for advanced certifications like OCE EJB, OCE JPA, OCE Web Services, OCE JSF exams. SCJP/OCPJP is per-requirement for these certifications. So instead of taking 2 exams (OCAJP + OCPJP) you can complete SCJP (OCPJP 6 single exam) and go for advanced certifications.

Shantaram,
Welcome to CodeRanch!

SCJP/OJCP 6 is not a pre-req for the Java 7/8 OCP exams. (Note that it hasn't been called SCJP since Oracle took over Sun). Which to take depends on your goals. If your goal is to save money or immediately take an advanced cert, OCJP 6 makes sense. If your goal is to have a current certification or learn about the many features added to Java "lately", I would recommend starting with OCA 7 or 8 and then take the OCP 7 or 8. Note that you have to take them as a combo. So it is OCA 7/OCP 7 or OCA 8/OCP 8. No mix and match.
