Having trouble with PHP updating a database

I've connected to a database by using
function db_connect() { $result = new mysqli('localhost','root', '******', 'DB'); if (!$result) { throw new Exception('Could not connect to database server'); } else { return $result; } }
But when I go to register a new customer, I get 'Could not register to DB' and that piece of code is
$result = mysqli_query($conn, "insert into user values('".$username."', sha1('".$password."'), '".$email."')"); if (!$result) { throw new Exception('Could not register to DB.'); }
And I have a user table in my DB

Do you have fixed your issue? Could you share what was causing the problem and how you fixed it? Might be helpful for other ranchers as well.
