Hi,

I start this thread coming from another thread Any chances of Head First Spring Framework getting released?

OK, I must admit that this sounds strange. Of course Head First Hibernate can ever happen whenever the Head First folk wants it .

But I meant: The only way I see a really successful Head First Hibernate book ever happens ...

I also see potential for a Head First Hibernate book. On one hand Java Persistence with Hibernate is Manning's bestselling book but on the other hand that book has a somewhat weak rating at Amazon.com with 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. Head First visual and metacognitive style is really missing here and that by itself bears a great potential for another Hibernate book.

But why do I see a difference here to other Head First titles? So far Head First books with the exception of Head First Design Patterns (HFDP) where all based on specfications and hence neutral to any feasible person. Hibernate is similar to Design Patterns in that, both topics have feasible people behind it. In case of HFDP these were the Gang of Four (GoF). In case of Hibernate these are Gavin King and Christian Bauer. The original GoF Design Patterns book was about 10 years old and no new edition were in sight, HFDP came just in time . But with Hibernate the story looks a bit different. The Hibernate guys are out there with a several month old book Java Persistence with Hibernate from Manning. So a Head First Hibernate book would be a real challenge to them in kind of competition.

It's just hard to believe that the Hibernate guys will leave that field for free. What will you do when they tell you in the aftermath of a Head First Hibernate book that the authors haven't understood some concepts. Nevertheless, it's also dangerous for them, what if the HF Hibernate authors can show that the Hibernate API is promising more than it can deliver?

Anyway it's always interesting how these Head First books evolve and finally become really amazing books .

Regards,
Darya

You have a point, and that's what I meant with...

...Gavin King and Christian Bauer might indeed not want, or be suited as HF authors for the reasons you mention.

Yes, I just reiterated because I'm also interested in a Head First book for Hibernate.

It's mainly because of the writing style Head First uses. I've read other books on numerous topics but when I read Head First, the hardest becomes easy. So this is one of the reason why I want to have a Head First Hibernate. To not forget the fact that ORM is a bit complicated.

There is a great need for a good Hibernate book. I've been very disappointed with the selection available. I have a similar stack to the one shown above, but alas, when I have a question, I no longer go to an index. I find the online documentation, which isn't great, but certainly acceptable as online docs, to be the only decent resource.

A Head First Hibernate book would be brilliant...slightly off topic, i've often wondered if Head First ever plan to update Head First EJB?

Although i do like Java Persistence with Hibernate, it doesn't hit every nail on the head and i often find myself looking for answers in other places

Bert,

What do you say? Everybody's request is for a Head First Hibernate book. Please have this in your cards.

I've recently been reading Java Persistence with Hibernate, having had limited experience with Hibernate previously. My thinking was that a book this size should provide a really gentle but complete coverage.

After 5 months, I had got as far as Chapter 7. Normally, I fly through books, but there was something about this one that just didn't work for me. I don't like 'giving up', but by chapter 7 I asked myself honestly a) was I enjoying it and b) was I learning, and I came to 'no' for both.

The book (as we know) was written by the authors of Hibernate, and to this end they know it inside out. However, this is also their weakness. Instead of giving me what I needed - an overview, followed by some good examples that I could follow and learn from, they would show me one way to do something in Hibernate, then in annotations, then with JPA xml, then with JPA annotations except for the bits that couldn't be reached and so had to use Hibernate annotations. Then they would give me a reason/situation when this approach couldn't be used, and the process would start over with a new technique. As a reference, this is excellent. As a learning book, it's a nightmare, so much so that I've stopped reading.

A HF Hibernate would certainly be of interest to me, although I am tempted to take a look at some of the other books in that stack!

Hi Guys,

If you're keeping track of new HF books, you've probably seen that O'Reilly is publishing 3 new titles, basically right now:

HF C# is already available,
HF Software Development will be out in the next few weeks
HF JavaScript will be out in the next few weeks

I think the team will take a much needed break, and then start thinking about new titles. I can tell you that there are already some new titles underway. I can't tell you what they are until they are closer to complete, but for sure new titles are on their way.

Next time we talk about new books, I'll bring up Hibernate and try to get a feeling about where such a book might be on the priority list.

hth,

Bert

Hi Bert Bates,

please help to consider publishing Head First Hibernate/JPA. It is much needed.(Head First treatment is required for ORM basics)

Thanks,
RaoPotla.
