Oliver Drobnik wrote:It just so happens that I wrote a book about the barcode scanning facilities which are built into iOS. Those are more than capable enough for the kinds of scanning functionality you are looking for.

Thanks Oliver!

Searching your blog I saw the video link to your presentation at MobiConf too, so that should be a very informative watch! Wish I could have been there!

Kindest regards,

Tim.

I'm looking into doing a new app that includes barcode scanning as a central feature.

Only standard barcodes (such as those found on store products) will be supported so with that in mind is the iOS in-built barcode scanning suitable/fast enough or do you recommend a 3rd-party SDK (and what do you recommend?).

Ease-of-use and consistency (of results) are my main criteria.

Thanks!

Thanks - I've replicated the problem here too (using IE6).

Firefox doesn't suffer from this issue so thanks for spotting it!

Cheers,

Tim.
Hmm,

So if I try and detect the mouse pointer leaving the browser area through the mousemove event, and force a mousedown (or at least trigger the function called by the mousedown) if this is detected, then that would fix it do you think?

Can I ask after what browser you used Eric?

Thanks for your time (and the feedback!),

Tim.
Hi all,

I've deployed a beta version of a virtual whiteboard system at the following URL:

http://www.virtual-whiteboard.co.uk/

Although, the system is working satisfactorily in major browsers running on WinXP (Firefox 1.5, Opera 8.53, Netscape 8.1, IE6 and IE7 Beta 2) I have limited opportunities to test on other platforms.

I know Safari on an Apple Mac had problems when I tested a month or so ago but I'm unsure whether later versions (of the browser and the site) have fixed this (my friend's Mac Mini was the first version not the recent Intel Core one).

As the site uses Ajax to communicate data between whiteboard users, most of the older browsers are guaranteed to fail, however I'm expecting most problems to come from the CSS layer handling code I've done that allows you to move layers around etc.

Anyhow, please have a look and use the feedback page on the site to leave me your impressions and issues/problems experienced.

Update: I forgot to mention above that you are required to register a user account (it's free) before being able to create whiteboards - although there is a demo whiteboard to try out from the home page without registering.

Thanks for your time in advance,

Tim.

May as well!

I'll start a new topic if that's okay so everyone can see the URL at the top of the thread.

Thanks,

Tim.
Hi Eric and Bear,

Thanks for your replies.

I've created a new whiteboard system using AJAX and some nasty CSS layer manipulation stuff.

Although I've been able to test the system on a WinXP platform, I don't have access to an Apple OS yet (and raising the funds to buy a Mac Mini is taking longer than anticipated  ).

Firefox 1.5, IE6 & IE7, Netscape 8.1 and Opera 8.53 seem okay with WinXP, and Firefox on Redhat 9 is good too, but that's the extent of my testing to date.

Opening the site up to a larger audience is I believe a quicker way to test other platforms (or do you advise something else)?

There are no advertisements on the site, and it is a free service for anyone to use, so there's nothing to sell as such.

I didn't want to break any forum rules by posting details before asking though...perhaps I could PM a link to you guys first?

Thanks,

Tim.

Is it okay to post a link in this forum to my AJAX related site in the hope of receiving some user feedback?

Thanks,

Tim.
