The good news is that the majority of the books content is applicable to programming for other mobile device platforms that ship with WebKit browsers (iOS, WebOS, Blackberry Torch, some Nokia), but this still leaves a lot of devices that code samples in the book just won't work on.

Does that mean that this book will help me be able to write an app that I can use on my droid, as well as, then be able to turn around and use it on my iPad? Most of my app ideas are for things like -- accessing online games or reviewing specific database information for online games. I'd like to be able to do it whether I was using my phone or my tablet.

And -- will the book give me enough of the 80% that I could learn the 80% and then grab the 20% to make my app work cross platform? Does it define the 80/20 items -- for instance, does it say, this portion will work multi-platform and also say, this is Android specific and doesn't function somewhere else? If not, would it then be "trial and error" to find out which parts work and don't work if you want to have it be cross OS?

Thanks.

Hello.

I was wondering if it is possible to make a Portal that would display report information in a dashboard format (charts, red/yellow/green lights, etc). The example in the first chapter of the Portlets in Action seem to point to yes.

Can you connect things like multiple Excel spreadsheets? Does it have to be DB based? Can you connect to things that are not in Java?

I suppose most important for me -- does this book cover the questions I have about with examples?

And, of course, as the 1st chapter indicates, a portal may not be the best solution? Is a dashboard to simple to need a portal? Would a gadget or stand alone webapp be easier (as far as learning curve?) Does the book cover how to develop Mashups or only Portlets?

Wow -- another question...heh -- Is Liferay the recommended system for Portlets or the only system for Portlets (or neither I suppose...)

Thanks.

I don't know about A_ppl_e -- but there are loads of "reputable" companies that are constantly dueling in court about stolen intellectual property, proprietary code that gets "misused", and for that matter complete designs for medical and electronic devices. There is an entire industry around cracking through and reverse engineering this kind of stuff, including employed "actors" who gain access to things like the "reference document" you mentioned to make their jobs easier.

In fact, the super company you mentioned has done this before and recently, here's a link: http://blogs.computerworld.com/16683/apple_steals_iphone_app_ideas_and_patents_them_and_lightsabers

While doing what your customer has asked you might not be the best option to provide a "warm fuzzy" feeling -- there are other options. There are different kinds of encryption tools, defining an IP or copyright before sending it for deployment as an app, or patenting the specific idea that your customer has.

They all have their different costs. -shrug- But even having these "blankets of protection" won't prevent all of the infringements your customer is afraid of -- there are ways around everything, if your product/idea is worth enough capital.

Good luck with your revisions or whatever other solution you come up with.
