I would say, it is difficult but not impossible. But yeah you need to have PR of Australia beforehand, or else you will find it nearly impossible to land a job there.

Your friends are right, if you have got Australian work experience, it's relatively easier to get job or if you are onsite, it's easier to jump to other company.

I had seen and met many Indian IT professionals in Australia coming directly on PR. Some got the job as soon as they arrived (I mean in just 2-3 months), some got it in 10-11 months or a year and some are still washing the car (or doing similar manual jobs). So it all depends on the person. Your skills, your past experience, the demand of the technology you are in to, and also luck to the some extent plays major part here. Some people remain focused on their goals and career and others are just busy and happy making money in any job they can get.

I have got a different question.

How important is Appraisals in one's career?

Is it something that is going to determine how successful you are going to be in your career or will it really help you to achieve your career goal?

If your 8+ year experience is all in development or it is divided into few years in development and other few in management?

I can speak for Australia. It's easier to get job into development than in to management. And at most of the places team size or company size will be very small and initially you might get paid very less and might have to take up entry level opportunities.

If your experience is from a well known global company, like IBM, Google, MS, Accenture, Cisco etc, it will be valued more than the experience from not so big or known companies. And your experience has to be verifiable from senior folks of your company. When you give not so known companies name in your resume, Australian employers becomes skeptical and they may not consider that experience at all (As many foreigners fake their experience). So in that case you might have to start from scratch, prove yourself and move ahead.

You might like to get into Management support job if you have got good project management experience. But remember, that job will be mostly not-technical and administrative kind of job. And you will require excellent communication skills, neutral accent and great personality to be into Managerial role in Australia. And yeah, at most of the place the organization structure is very flat rather than hierarchical as in India. So not many mid level managerial position exists.

But in case you have to, Bangalore is the best place for IT jobs. Prepare you resume and post in moster.com & naukri.com . There are many sites like chetnaforum javaken etc which have information about walkins.

Yeah even I like Bangalore. I have passed 5 years of my life in Bangalore and loved the city thoroughly.

Thanks for the suggestion and name of those websites. I will check them out.

You will land an interview in no time. Give it a month.

I hope so. Thanks.

Deepak Bala wrote:Welcome to JR. Have you tried posting your resume in job web sites ? Also, upload it to an employer's database if they have one.

I have uploaded my resume on Naukri.com and MonsterIndia. No response from Naukri.com and got few generic emails from Monster from some consultants.

I have uploaded my resume on TCS website, but no reply from their side yet. May be because I am still in Australia.

And about the wasted time, how much time are we talking about ?

I have already wasted around 4 months here doing a Non-IT job ( I work in Supply Chain and Logistic at the moment).

Sachin Dere wrote:Small question. why would you want to return to India when you can get a JOb in Australia based on your Qualifications?

Australia has got very small IT market compared to USA and India. And Graduate positions in Big and Mid tier IT companies are only available to Australian permanent residents and citizens. Being foreign resident I am not eligible to apply for any graduate positions. It is difficult to secure any decent programming job without Australian PR. Mid tier and Small IT firms are not willing to train freshers here, they want only those people who are experienced and can start working on projects from day one. And bigger firms are willing to train fresher, but they only train Australian residents, as they want to make sure that their trained candidates won't leave them due to their visa conditions. Most of the Government jobs requires citizenship due to security clearance and all. The only job currently I can get here in any company is to make websites using CMS or PHP.

I am eligible to apply for Australian PR but it takes around 2 years to be granted, and I can't wait for 2 years just to get a decent job here in IT. And before coming here, though I thought about gaining some experience here after completing my degree, I never thought of staying here permanently. And I am not much concerned about money either, because I come from financially good background and I always believe that if you have got talent and if you follow your passion then money will chase you, you don't have to chase it.

Hello fellows,

I have been a silent observant of JavaRanch community since quite a few weeks now, especially Job Discussion forum as I am on one of the crucial stage of my IT career now. Initially I reached here through Google search and then I found lots of useful information here and very helping and kind people.

Anyway so this is my very first post here and I hope this is just the beginning of my long association with CodeRanch community.

Before presenting my question, I would like to give you some info about my background. I am originally from India and I have completed my Master in Technology in IT (MTech-IT) with web and software development specialization from one of the leading Universities in Australia. I have finished my degree with distinction average, and I have also completed 3 months internship with a small IT agency, which was part of course. I finished my degree in December and got my graduation in March and I am still in Australia and planning to return back to India anytime during next month. My main specialization was Core Java and J2EE (EJB, Sturt, RMI, Hibernate, ORM, JDBC) during my Master.

Before returning back to India, I have tried to apply for many jobs in India from here itself and also contacted people in my network working in IT in India for the job. But over the time I realized that it is very difficult to even secure an interview without physically being present there. But anyway now I can say that I am almost on my way to return back.

So here goes my question >> After returning back to India, I want to find and start a job as soon as possible and I don't want to waste any time as I have already wasted couple of months after graduation here and hence I am in no position to waste any more time, which can hurt my career in future. So what is the best strategy that you can advice to secure and find a job as soon as possible in India and start working soon. I know most of the big companies do their major hiring of freshers "On Campus" in India. So in this situation, what should be the strategy of any foreign university fresh graduate who wants to enter into Indian workforce. Do you reckon soon after lending there I should approach as many consultants as possible? or do you reckon I should keep my eye on all the walkins and attend as many of them as possible? And what do you think about approaching companies and HR department of the same directly?

I have lived in India at many different places, before I came here. So it doesn't matter to me much in which city I am living as long as I am doing a job that I love doing (which is basically programming). So I am ready to move anywhere for job. In this case, do you think that I should travel around all major cities and IT hubs and explore all possible avenues to get into workforce or I should stick to a one single big city like Mumbai or Bangalore or Pune or Hyderabad and keep trying hard in the same city till I get a job?

::::::::

I will really appreciate your advice and input and I am sure it will be also helpful to many other foreign graduates who are returning back to India after completing their studies. And thanks for taking time to read my quite a long post.
