Ok, I feel mega stupid for asking about the very first assignment.
I did the assignment 1a. It works. This is mainly because of the fact that I read "Getting information from the command line". I don't really understand how it works. Should I study arrays in my "Just Java 2" book, fifth edition? That would be chapter 5.
Is there a current reading list around here somewhere that tells us which chapter to read, or to keep reading on the basis of the assignments?
Or do we just read the chapters, and see how we can solve the assignments?
Do we send in 1a and 1b together or do we send each seperately?
As for 1b.....I understand what is asking for (I think) but not sure how to do it.....so...would it be too big of a hint to ask which chapter might be appropriate to read it for? If it is too big of a hint, mea culpa.......
And we only need Just Java 2 book, right?
Thanks for any help.....

Thank you. That is interesting. Anyway, I learned something new today. Thanks to all of you who helped me through this mini-jar journey....

Sorry for the confusion. I actually meant the class files. I did everything as you suggested, and only saw as what I already stated, the variables, methods, etc.. I didn't see the class files itself. I know there are there, because as I said earlier, I read them in Notepad. I just wanted to read them in Eclipse as well know how to open it in Eclipse. Does that make sense? Thanks for the help. I'm sorry if my questions are dumb.....I really don't know all this...

Ok, I did what you suggested, adding a project, right-clicking it to add the external jar file. But, when I see the files in Eclipse, I only see the methods and variables and the getters and setters. However, I can't see the code in the file. How do I see that? Thanks for the help that I have received already. I really appreciate it.

Ok. I opened it with winzip. There was no META-INF, and I don't understand the significance of that. What is it anyway? There was a Manifest.MF file through, but it's not something that I can read. As for the classes in the file, there were several and I was able to read them all through Notepad.

I looked at the program that I was trying to open, and it is an executable jar file. When I right-click it, and the properties open up, it says that it can be opened with javaw, hence the reason why I thought it could be opened with it. Otherwise, I have no clue what to do at all. Is javaw even a command line statement? I think the error message states, according to where I put it, that it can't find the main file in it. So it seems to expect the main file every time I try to open it. I hope this makes some sense to you because I have no clue what I'm even saying now. I'm sorry. If anyone can figure out this........I would be so mega grateful.
Otherwise to simplify this whole thing, how do you simply open a executable jar file?
TIA.

How do you open a jar file? Is it through javaw for the command line? If you do open it through javaw, and it comes up saying that it couldn't find
main class, what does that mean? That it lacks the main statement? Why would you jar a file that lacks it then, since it can't be opened.
How do you import it through Eclipse? TIA for any help. I'm really really confused........and any input would be really really helpful... Can anyone recommend a really basic book on Eclipse?

I am currently reading XML Beginning. I am in chapter 4 which is about XSLT. In order to follow the examples, I am supposed to download MSXSL from microsoft site. However, I've not been able to find it at all. THe only thing that keeps showing up is Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4). Since that is not MSXSL.....I am getting quite desperate in trying to find it. Can anyone please point out the location for downloading this MSXSL? TIA...........

It's ok, I just found it. Here is the link, in case any of you have a hard time finding the link.

When I was wandering around among these pages, on page 3 of Cattle Drive, there was something mentioned about XML assignments. The links on that page kept coming back to the discussion page. I've been unable to find out anything about it. Can someone please point out the right page to find out about the XML assignments? TIA.......

The only reason why I am asking this question here is because of the fact that the XML assignments was mentioned here. Hence the reason why I asked here, in case anyone is familiar with the post I mentioned. So please do not flame me for asking here.... thanks.

Hi all,
The more I read about JavaRanch cattle drive college, the more I want to join. However, my question is really this since I've been unable to find an answer to this specific question. Can a person who knows next to nothing about java benefit from this cattle drive? I've heard of benefits of this program to experienced programmers...and the "complaining" of the nitpicking which is highly valued part of this program. However what about people who know nothing about java and want to take the Sun's test maybe by Nov? Or is that too soon? Any opinions, suggestions, and ideas will be greatly appreciated.
TIA..
