I think the software industry is one of the most lucrative industry in India at the moment. No other private sector jobs hold as much promise as IT does. I would never have got this much salary as I get now if it were not for IT industry. IT and ITES is doing a great job for development of the country without any doubt.

I do not have any complaints about this work except that I am not passionate about it. I am more enthusiastic about working for rural and urban development in my country. I would always be grateful to this industry even if I manage to succeed in my goal and move of this work.

Nowadays salaries are difficult to predict. But what you are saying is exception rather than rule. I think the salary (1.3 million rs/ yr) is at the level of development manager/architect that too on the higher side. Its definitely not the average salary for software engineers or even senior software engineers.

If you are a developer, you would probably do development. If you are a QA, you would do testing. I have never been any where onsite but I think thats how it would be.

Hey Atul,

If you are in the US, you could be in a big trouble. I am assuming you are in India. The answer to your question depends on what type of company you are in. If you are in small company / startup you might get away because most of them really don't have hard background checking. But you might get fired for technical incompetency in case you lack the skills of that experience. If you have joined a big corporation, they would definitely call up your last employer's references to verify. Many of them verify something like last 3 employers.

I think you should start looking for another job (of course do not fake anything this time) and quit to be on the safer side and also to get rid of all the mental trouble.

Same story here. After 12th standard new nothing except Medical and Engg. Was getting admission at both the places but hated biology and chose to study Computer Science Engg (thats where all the people with good marks were going and I belonged to that category) in a REC. Now want to quit this field entirely. I was thinking what I can do. I do not have much savings since I have been working for just a couple of years. Then I found what I want to do. I am now preparing for Civil Services. But I have not quit my job. I am planning to quit as soon as I clear prelims. But that has given me a new direction to work towards and achieve my goal and hope I will clear it.

Where is Sun in Pune ? Could you tell me the address please ? I am also interested if I decide to change in the future. One of my friends joined in T-Systems recently and he is quite happy with the work culture and also work. I am not aware the salary standards of T-System though.Don't look at it in absolute terms. How much raise did you get over your current salary though. If its 25-30 % or more, you should be pretty happy. In any case the offer is consistent with the general standards in Pune. That's what I think.

Very well said Anand Prabhu. I agree 100% with you.

Lot companies do that sort of work. The point is that not all get to do that kind of work. So even if you go to a big brand company like Veritas which boasts of 1/3rd of their patents from Pune office, it is not guaranteed that you would get to do 'fundu' work. So, it all depends. Chance plays an important part. In my company I did some decent work (not fundu by any means though) till last month. But some of the architecture changes were anounced lately and I am fortunately in the redesigning team. So now I find myself doing some 'fundu' work.

I'd say don't go for "all" companies? Looks like you have good education background. There are companies who do value your education background. People with masters' degree from a good outside institution are not found easily in India. I know people who did their masters from US wihtout any prior experience and have got very very good offers. If your resume is strong and if you can bring something different that can add a lot of value to the products, you can get a very good offer. Check out for Veritas, Amberpoint, Paramteric, T-Systems, Sybase. But those in Poona.

I guess something around 600,000 is what you should be pretty happy with in a good product based company. You can get that depending on how good you are technically. I am talking about Pune, since I work there.

I think IITians are brilliant, good problem solvers and good thinkers in general. They need to be treated differently as should be other NITians and REC Computer Science Engineers. Most of them are treated differently in the reality and that is the way it should be. They are definitely miles ahead at a fresher level as compared to other private engg college graduates and mca or msc or mcm or whatever other degrees are there. Of course there could be exceptions. There always are.

I have seen people graduating that too with a computer engg or computer tech or information tech without actually writing significant lines of codes from these colleges. There many freshers who have not seen unix in their life. The private college students are not made to work hard at all.
Whereas IITians would have written tonnes of lines of code by the time they graduate and have deep understanding of most of the core computer science. Many might have had some publications as well.

This is all what I have seen that I am writing here with all due respect to all non-IITian, non-REC colleges. Of course over the period of time, with experiece, they may be able to catch up with IITians.

Now, how can you measure these 2 categories on the same scale ? Does not make sense at all. The IITians need to get lot more respect because they are lot more capable.

Disclaimer: I belong to an REC/NIT.

That's not true. I usually work properly for 40 hours a week. But there could be circumstances like final stages of release where I put in long hours for a few days. But that's not just in India but everywhere, I guess.

I don't opt for any of them. Would try for some good product development company.
