IMO, something like $35/hour to $40 or more would be fair. Austin, TX will have a very resonable cost of living. The quality of life there with both UTA and the state capital could be excellent. You will enjoy messing with Texas.

I don't know where your from, but if your from the Indian subcontinent, the weather may be very appealing too.

Trail Boss you have shown me your powers.

In the name of the apostle Paul, I call on you Thomas Paul to cast aside your sherifs garb. Uncloak yourself, come to me from across the darkness, show Mr. Wheaton that you are not his pawn. Show him that you are a soldier of God.

Please let use remind him that there is not just one rule - be nice. But that there is one true God.

Paul I pray you make the terminal in front of Mr. Wheaton display four characters.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. for ever and ever.

Mark I have reread this thread. I think my evil twin is as tough to foreigners in this thead as he is anywhere on the board.

However, given your hostility to foreigners, I had a feeling you were being less than kind in your words.

Mark would you please point out to me the post which you find to be not nice. I'm intrestest in posts where you think I'm doing something like a personal attack.

Once again, I can't help it if you don't like my opinions.

The issue of supply and demand for programming talent in the US is one the legilature should stay out of. The American free enterprise system is not one where central planning by the legislature is called for.
There was never a shortage of programming talent. The industry duped the legislature into giving the industry a subsidy. The legislature needs to end the subsidy and the H1-B's need to go home. The industry has used the subsidy to fatten their pockets at the expense of labor.

If the legislature thinks America needs more programmers, why don't they budget more funding for education? Special interest money has bought access, and access has rewarded special interest.

It's time to end the H1-B program.

My position is that H1-Bs are not able to compete on a fair footing with the domestic work force. When foreign nationals are free to move about the plane without the green card lap belt on then I think I'll join you in grand opening ceremony at the boarding gate.

But the lap belt allows them to buy citizenship in the US. My ancestors bought citizenship in this country bringing down the stars and bars. The blood that runs in my veins has the courage to lead the charge.

Boss, I been thinking about your post for a couple of days.

Maybe it would just be better if I resigned.

If I understand things, if I resign then you won't have to pay higher unemployment insurance premiums.

If it would not be asking too much could you think about the good times as well as the bad when and if somebody asks you about my time here?

I'm thinking of packing up my old truck and going to california, maybe make a new start.

I am going to try to get a job in a record store by the beach. I gotta find this song about how long before my soul gets things wright.
A woman sings it.

My thanks to Jim and Ernest.

Mark, I accept and appreciate your apology. Your advice to the many on the job discussion board is always worth reading and right on the mark.

Mark, do you or do you not hire in the NY/NJ market?

One other thing that Mark and others know is what the IP address of the originator of these posts is. afroz pathan may or may not be a real person. With seven posts to his credit, it looks to me like he wandered up to the bar and started asking a bunch of questions.

I don't find my tone condescending. Is miss manners on the staff? Is my name not in compliance with the naming rules?

I am just a volunteer here.

Immigration Voice is a non-profit organization (501 (c) (4) pending) working to alleviate the problems faced by legal high-skilled foreign workers in the United States. We act as an interface between this set of immigrants and the legislative and executive branches of the government.

They've got a spiffy web site.

Is it my fault I have a different opinion than M H?

I been warned and I liked the sheriffs to stand behind Mark and tell me I've been wrong, wrong, wrong again.

Ernest Friedman-Hill where are you?

J2EE

The collaborative process under the lead of Sun clearly beats the heavy handed predatory nature of M$.

You could put your buddy google to work. Try using the phrase cost-of-living in as exact phrase and the city and state in as words you would like a hit on.

IMO, you would be better off in India. The US is about suffer a severe oil shock and the economy is going to tank. Have you checked the price of gold lately?

They should pay you flight tickets, negotiate for that. If not look some other consultants who provides better benifits.

Come on, be honest, this guy is in no position to negotiate with the man. He needs a job and he cannot say much besides yes dear.

I don't see anything fishy about this. The law requires that a candidate be on the payroll earning a wage fromt the day he enters the country. The hiring manager does not want to hire him site unseen. So the candidate must pay his salary in front money for the time it usually takes to find the candidate a job in the US.

It really cuts into an employers profit to move a person around the globe and put the person up in decent lodging while the consulting company finds a suitable hook-up.

It's not unusual for a company to want you to move to a technology that's proprietary or lacks marketability. Later on, they often change technologies again. When they change, they sack you. You should sack them now.

I've been with my company for about 7 1/2 yrs now and I've only gotten an increase 3 times...first one was a big increase, the other was $700 and the other one was mid range. I get 4 weeks vacation, a good boss, 1 hr. of travel, and help from my co-workers when need it, but I hate the work, it's Cobol...go figure. I still have to face deadline pressures and a few attitudes from some co-workers, but it's minimal. Should I quit? I'm thinking of going back to school or so.

I got some doubt here. One hour of travel is the same as 30 minutes 2 work and 30 minutes home?

I'd think about the quality of your customers, the replacability of your business knowledge combined with the job security of your position and I always try to see if I can get my current employer to upgrade their technology. The JVM runs on a mainframe - can you tie it to your current assignment?

To be honest, I lay the blame at the feet of the American worker in many ways.

Is it American worker is is that human being? I.E> is it something distinctly American?

When GWB and his buddy John McCain want to let 400K guest workers into the US, I am concerned. That's two strong months of job growth in the US.

There's jobs Americans workers won't do. There's jobs Americans don't want Americans to pay Americans the going rate to do. There's jobs Americans don't want to pay college educated people heath insurance on.
