The JavaRanch uses a heavily modified branch of the base JForum code, which has been put together by the staff. Below is a list of some of the changes made by contributors.

UBB to JForum

Originally the site used the UBB forums software but in 2009 it was decided to move to a Java based forum to give the staff greater control over the features. The bulk of the migration planning, data migration and the management was done by Pauline McNamara? and Jeanne Boyarsky. Ernest Friedman-Hill, Ulf Dittmer and Jeanne Boyarsky all did too much work to recount, both for initial cutover and ongoing feature enhancements.

Feature List

While not a complete list, some of the additional features and changes by the JavaRanch staff include:

  • Reliability, Availability, Stability and Performance issues with initial migration
  • automated sitemap for improved search engine indexing
  • Improvements to error messages on the "forgotten password" screen
  • Ensure the user must enter their password when changing their email address
  • Added error messages if a user tries to activate multiple times
  • Created application that processes email bounce messages, warns the user and stops us sending further emails to them (and deletes spam, out-of-office, invitations to social sites...)
  • Added Javadoc, FindBugs and Cobertura code coverage to build
  • Added administrative icons so they can easily see if a user's account is inactive, has a bad username or a bad email address
  • Added numerous administrative user management functions
  • managing site wide 'nofollow' black and white lists
  • Allowed to move thread and delete it from original forum
  • Fixed the "Go To" combobox to prevent showing hidden forums
  • Fixed link to last post in multi-page topics
  • Allowed to disable smilies by default per forum in the Admin Panel
  • Allowed users to mark their topics as resolved. Allow moderators to confirm/cancel the resolved status.
  • detection and linking of core classes to Sun API by Class and fully qualified name eg HashMap? and java.lang.String
  • detection and linking of other specified words, used for SEO eg the word Java, internal links like FAQs and info (KeepItDown and ServletsFaq), and sponsored words
  • BumperStickers
  • revamped Lucene indexing to be thread-safe, and added more search options
  • updated numerous 3rd party libraries to current versions
  • added option to use Aspirin embedded mail engine instead of external mail server
  • added integration with various social media sites
  • addition of page views optimized for mobile devices
  • numerous other bug fixes and performance enhancements
  • "Like" feature to give individual posts a "thumbs up"
