Head First Design Patterns by Eric Freeman, Elisabeth Freeman, Kathy Sierra, Bert Bates is a very good book to start with. It is available in India, and I guess it costs Rs. 500. Worth buying.

I second Mani Ram's suggestion. You can think about your second book once you have thoroughly understood HFDP. Good Luck Dipti...

We do have a Design Patterns forum.

But HFDP is the best choice. There are others, including getting the Gang Of Four's book, because everyone has to have it on their bookshelf.

The classic book on patterns is Design Patterns by the GoF (Gang of Four by Gamma, Helm, Johnson and Vlissides).

A Java approach to Patterns is Grands: "Design Patterns in Java". Grands
book is a bit easier to read than GoF.

I havn't read any of the "head first" books, so I can not comment on them.
