It may be a sily question, butb i want to be sure...
Is the any Development Kit of Java to work only in DOS. Say, i have a PC that has only DOS as O/S and nothing else. Can i install any JDK there so that i can code Java applications by edit of DOS. Its understandable that if any then that can't run appletviewer....just curious....

I would think that it would work fine with just DOS as long as you don't use any GUI components. Of course, there are minimal memory requirements and such.

And I have used DOS edit as my text editor for java source files with no problem.

My logic tells running a java bytecode should be possible whenever java runtime environment is present. But DOS has limitations in dealing with memory. AFAIK, a simple "Hello World" program takes 16 MB space to run. So ultimately in a PC where DOS is the only O/S, some work around is needed to run. I am still
Bearing in mind that J2ME bytecodes need 512 KB to 2 MB space only run.

Just to clear up if you are asking the right question...
Is the situation that you have an existing PC, presumably quite old, currently running DOS and in use for some DOS applications, and you want to also run one or more Java applications on it as well?
Or is the situation that you have a PC which for some reason you can't or won't install Windows on, and you want to use it as a platform for running Java programs?
If it's the first, you are probably out of luck. There is no Sun or IBM JDK which runs on DOS, and I'm not aware of any others. DOS is just not enough of an operating system to support Java.
If you situation is closer to the second case, you should really consider installing Linux. It's free, it's good at running on machines with a lot less memory and hard drive space than a typical Windows installation, and (best of all) it's easy to install a JRE or JDK and run Java programs.
Can you tell us a bit more about what you need to do, and what your limitations are?
