Hall of Fame explanation forum?

Here is an idea that I think would be great for Java Ranch. You know how you'll browse through a forum and find some real gems in terms of explanations on certain topics. Or you'll read through a topic that is a re-hash of a previous thread, and someone refers (hopefully with a link) the post to some explanation which summarized the solution/problem exquisitely?
I propose that there be forum/section/place to go where these gems are collected out of the past posts and put in one place for perusal. It could be called the Gems of Cowpoke Wisdom or whatever, but I think it would be amazingly useful.

Maybe we could make a special read only forum for Gems. Then the maderators could move especially useful thread there.

I like this idea as well, but who will go through all of the forums and decide? That is a lot of work to ask the moderators to go through.

In SCJP forum we did similar thing: found the best answers for popular questions and made FAQ out of it

Maha Anna has a collection of links for SCJP exam on her page. Do you have some particular forum in mind? You can contact moderator and check if he/she is enthusiastic about it...

Well I was thinking about the Java specific forums in particular (not the Java Ranch forum necessarily or the meaningless drivel although i suppose those could go in as well). I wasn't thinking of a particular forum in particular.
I really don't think it would be so much work especially for some folks who have been around for quite some time, and who really know of a number of such gems. I'm not sure I would want to put up a separate page which contained the links to the "real gems" although maybe that's a solution. It seems to be incongruous with the spirit and structure of the ranch.

This is remarkably similar to something I proposed way back (Feb 2000 !), but never happened. I still tend to think its a reasonable idea, but it has become a lot harder to do now there are so many messages to sort through.

I don't think that the FAQ's get visited as often as they should. If it is a forum like the rest of the Ranch it would be more comfortable for newbies to browse.

Even if we don't go back and sort through old posts, we could start from here. Maybe pick a good thread, copy it over (possibly clean it up some). The conversational tone of the threads is often easier to read than a formal FAQ. FAQ's are "correct" but get boring to read after a while. (Sorry to any FAQ authors out there

).

This was an incredibly similar idea to the one you proposed.
Perhaps to address Cindy's point, an ambitious Hall of Fame moderator could peruse all threads over some period like a week or a fortnight, and just pick out each post which linked back to javaranch (could be automated one would imagine) and then using that pool, further refine the posts to a suitable degree. Thereafter, a post could be "nominated" by bartenders and sheriffs to be HOF'd.
Just an idea on methodology.

I wonder if it is possible to create a non-writable forum in UBB and stick all the FAQ's into this forum... each in its own un-writable thread. We could call it the FAQ forum and label it that you should look there first before posting.
