which version of Netbeans you are using? The Netbeans 5.0 and the upcomming 5.5 (still in beta 2 -- http://www.netbeans.info/downloads/download.php?type=5.5b2 -- , you can download it though) support Java 5. You can configure and load the Java 5 as your default library for your project: right click on the project name, than choose properties, than libraries, than manage platforms, than add platform than choose the directory where you install your JDK and in the end choose it as default.
