What is ant?

I am extremely new to Java programming and I see quite a bit about ant being used to build sources. Why use ant and not just a regular compile?

I know that last question stems solely from my lack of knowledge of what ant actually is.

So, in lamens terms, what exactly does ant do and how can it benefit me?

Please be easy on me I did do a search on it, but most things I read assumed the reader at least knew what ant was
