wants to know the basic things about maven

hi i am new to this topic.
to create a new project in maven i got this command from some site
mvn archetype:create -DgroupId=com.mycompany.app -DartifactId=my-app
but wen i execute this command in command promt i am getting error

i searched for solutions for this problem in google ..but it s mentioned that they solved this problem by changing settings.xml file in .m2 folder ..but i can't find any such folder in apache-maven folder ..
kindly provide some solutions for this .

For .m2 did you look under:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\.m2 ?

Were you connected to the internet when you tried the command? Any proxy/etc getting in the way? The fact that Maven couldn't connect to the standard central repository would have me a little worried
