Closing telnet session to UNIX box closes my program

I telnet to a UNIX box and start my program as a background process (./myprogram.sh &). As long as I keep the telnet session open, my program works fine. But if I close the telnet session, my program also gets killed.
Is there a way, I close the telnet session and still have by program running in the background ?
