Permanent path environment setting...

I want to run javac command in linux in any directory.
I think PATH environment variant should be there just like windows.
How to set this environment?

in your ~/.bash_profile file, have a line like
export PATH=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2/bin:$PATH
[edited to add the 'bin' directory which is where javac is to be found]
