java installation problems

I installed java according to the directions on sun's web page, but I'm still having trouble. I have Mandrake 9.2. I installed java in /usr/local/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04/ and added the binary directory to my path and put JAVA_HOME in my profile. The problem I'm having is that whenever I try to run java, all it says is "Killed" and doesn't do anything. I don't know why it's saying this, if it's a problem with the way I set up java, or if it's an issue with Mandrake. I get the same error message when I try to run javac or javadoc. Can anyone help me with this?
