I have attempted over 20 times to download Mandrake 10 Official. Every single time that I download any of the .iso files and run the md5sum command line tool, the generated sum is different from the listed md5 sum for that specific .iso file. What is happening? Is this normal? Is it a browser problem? I have tried both IE 6 and Netscape 7.2.

I am running the md5sum command tool as follows
md5sum Mandrakelinux-10.1-Community-Download-CD1.i586.iso

Thanks,

Do you get the same md5sum every time?
I wouldn't have downloaded more than two times.
Is the filesize correct?

Nope, I'm receiving different sum results, for every downloaded iso file.
For example, Mandrakelinux10.0-Official-Download-CD1.i586.iso is listed as being 711,488 KB, yet my downloaded iso file is only 711,188. Why is this happening? Why is there always a 300 KB discrepancy? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

I decided to purchase the CDs for Mandrake 10.1 Community. I attempted over 35 downloads of the .iso files for Mandrake 10.0 Official. Unfortunately, every single .iso file was corrupt. The md5sum and listed md5sum did not match.

I discovered BitTorrent today and successfully downloaded Suse and Fedora. Now I have to decide on which to install Fedora, Suse, or Mandrake? Which is better in general?

I'm glad to hear you nstalled Suse successfully.

I have no good idea what might have went wrong.
I never downloaded iso-files, and hadn't had broken downloads.
I thougth the ft-protocoll would keep an eye on the download and mention, if it wasn't complete.

The size a file uses on the disk might vary, depending on the sector-size, but not on 300 kb. 256 or 512 kb - maybee. But 300?
And if the filesize is mentioned on the webpage, they shouldn't use the disk-space used.

If you used Windows for downloading, I would search the virus-forums for corrupted downloads, but bashing windows in the linux-section is too cheap.
And if you download often, and didn't got errors before, the virus-idea is abstrus.
