I am not sure if this is relevant...but if you are running an AMD64, Eclipse supposedly will not work...

bug report

Something appears that some people are having to run Eclipse from with its own directory...

To do this, you have to

Just running ./eclipse won't work, because it looks in your current location for eclipse, so you must first make sure you are in eclipse's installation directory.

i installed eclipse successfully, but when starting it up it keeps saying it cannot find the JRE..

I installed the J2SDK1.4.2_06 in the /usr directory too, is this yet another path issue?
