No specific duties! Just keep doing the good stuff you're doing right now - actively participate in the discussions. "ranch hand" simply means you have crossed a certain number of messages. It is the next level of seniority after the "green horn". The JavaRanch site is run by volunteers who are working professionals. When we feel a need for more volunteers, the moderators of various forums( "bartenders" ) and people with superpowers( "Sheriffs" ) nominate active participants( "ranch hands") for open slots. The voting is conducted in a private forum. Then an invitation is extended to the lucky individuals to come and work with us( for free!! ) When they accept the offer, they become a "bartender". Hope that gives you an idea....
