I am coming from a Sun Solaris shop where I used Nedit editor (www.nedit.org) extensively to write Java programs. We don't have Solaris here and I have a Windows laptop. I downloaded Cygwin and am using it quite successfully at the command prompt execept when I try to run Nedit. If I execute Nedit, nothing happens. I suspect I have to setup some sort of X-windows emulation? I am not sure that sequence of commands to execute. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Well, I start cygwin. I then do startx and then I do nedit and nedit opens for me just fine. cygwin starts in a non graphical mode which nedit needs. Hence the reason to start the xwindows server using startx. That's how it is on my PC anyway.
Hello Gregg and Joe, Thanks for your responses. Nedit works as you indicated. But I need more help. I was running nedit in the Hummingbird X-windows terminal in my previous job (the server was a Sun Solaris machine). Nedit 5.5 which is what is installed with Cygwin, had Tabs and a much more pleasant display than the tiny, cramped, and No Tabs display that I am getting with Cygwin. Any help that you can provide on this front will be appreciated. Regards, Bharat
The Cygwin setup program shows nedit 5.5.1 as the current version. I've got tabs and I'm running 5.5:
If you have an older version of nedit, try pointing setup at a different server. There may be out-of-date mirrors out there. If your display is really cramped, try changing your screen resolution or nedit font size. I'm seeing 67 lines of text in nedit with my resolution at 1280x1024.

OK. Figured out Tab settings in the Preferences setting for NEdit. Thanks gents. One more question: when I start the X-term window in the Cygwin window by typing startx, it correctly opens the X-term window. I want the default fonts here to be set to something bigger than what it has (very small fonts). Don't know enough about Cygwin X-windows setting to do so. Kindly respond. Thanks.
