Each Linux distribution has got one Desktop Environment and a related Session manager with it. So, you must be having Gnome as the Desktop Environment in RH Linux 9.0 by default. Ther you have a utility called "Session Preferences". That utility saves your session at the time of logout and will restart those session at the time of login. So, you do not want any application to start at your login start up, go to "Session Preferences" and remove all the entries in the "Current Session" tab.
