Linux is a Unix-like operating system kernel. It is a trademark of Linus Torvalds, the original author and current caretaker of the Linux kernel. The kernel is packaged with other software to form a distribution. A linux distribution usually has a goal or philosophy, like emulating Windows (Linspire), running servers (RHEL) or firewalls/routers (SmoothWall) and so on. The distribution is really what determines the user experience (i.e. what window manager, web browser, editor, word processor and so on is installed).
