Hi,
I am new to Linux and want to learn it. The problem i have is that the PC that i use in my room belongs to my room mate. It has winXP installed in it. I dont want to disturb the XP and setup linux simultaneously. One of my friend told me that linux will format the hard disk and remove XP from the system. Can linux and XP co-exist. What should i do to install linux without disturbing XP?

Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. You can install Linux side-by-side with XP in what is called a dual boot configuration. Since you don't own the computer in your room, one of the following options would probably be better:
Many Linux distributions have bootable CDs (Knoppix is my favorite, there are others) so you don't even have to install. Boot from the CD for Linux. Boot from the hd for XP.
Another option is to run Linux inside a virtual machine after starting XP. VMWare offers a free "VMWare Player" and numerous Linux distributions configured for it.
