Hi Ranchers, I just got 3 CD pack from canonical of Feisty Fawn Right now I am running dapper on my machine (P3 and 712MB RAM). I run the Live CD and didn't notice anything significant apart from rounded windows, automatic A/V codec install. What are other things that makes feisty sellable What are potential configuration issues that I could run into and should avoid? If you have some web reading please share it. Cheers, Prateek

Drapper Drake is an Ubuntu with LTS (Long Term Support), so it's somewhat more stable than Feisty Fawn. If you're happy with it, stick with it. But if you're a person who likes to experiment and enjoys the cutting-edge release, go and install Feisty or you can wait till Gutsy Gibbon is released (somewhere this year) or another Ubuntu LTS (Hardy Heron) which will be released somewhere next year. I personally like Feisty Fawn because it's newer and has more features (codec support, etc) than Drapper Drake. I upgraded from Drapper Drake to Feisty Fawn without any problem and so far I'm very much happy with it.

Thanks Freddy, Will the configuration (P3 and 712 MB RAM) be good enough for feisty? One more question what is the default JDK with feisty, is it mustang? Cheers, Prateek

How fast is your P3? I have an Athlon 1400XP with 712Mb and Fiesty runs great. The default Java is gcj which is slow and not feature-complete. See the Ubuntu Guide how to install Sun Java (and every other trick). I've run into a show stopper bug trying to burn dvds, but it doesn't appear to effect many systems.

Neither did I! If you aren't satisfied with the performance of Ubuntu, try Xubuntu. It's the same great OS, just a lighter-weight window manager (you can just switch window managers, no need to reinstall, the Ubuntu Guide is your friend). I use it for virtual machines at work and it's very quick compared to the default Ubuntu with Gnome.

I guess P3 should be fine. I used to install Feisty Fawn in my old notebook, P4 1.6 GHz, 256 MB and it was still working pretty fast. Well, that's the beauty of Linux

I upgraded to feisty today, now I am not a pagan any more coz I removed the dual boot also so now its full shebang My machine has P4 1.7Ghz not 1.4 that I mentioned earlier(I was at work . It's working like a charm so far, few observations boot time is reduced GUI is almost identical with old one(I need to add some new key binding for firefox, eclipse etc.) A/V plugins are automatically updated speed is pretty fast I'll try Xubuntu sometime later. thanks Freddy and Joe for proselytizing me [ September 29, 2007: Message edited by: prateek urmaliya ]
