Hi Syskata,

I ran into a similar problem as you describe several months ago. I encountered it on both (RedHat)linux and windows. If it turns out to be the same problem, I don't think it's specific to a particular os release.

The problem was due to MySQL 5.0 (I'll assume you're using 5.0) using a new authentication mechanism which threw off the installation process. I found out you had to specify an option to use traditional authentication or something like that to get past the hangup.

Sorry, I don't remember exactly what I did to correct it now, but I hope that will give you some direction at least. I think it might have been one of the mysqladmin switches.

Hope this helps...
Aloha,
Doug

Isn't there an init.d script you can use to start mysql something like:

also please find the log file and post its content as with what you have posted it is really difficult to say why MySQL just ends for apperantly no reason.

george

Hi Syskata,

The error log:

080121 05:53:14 mysqld started
080121 5:53:14 InnoDB: Operating system error number 13 in a file operation.
InnoDB: The error means mysqld does not have the access rights to
InnoDB: the directory.
InnoDB: File name ./ibdata1
InnoDB: File operation call: 'create'.
InnoDB: Cannot continue operation.
080121 05:53:14 mysqld ended

indicates a possible permission problem. You need to find out what directory mysqld is trying to create ./ibdata1 in first. Then, check if the directory is owned by the mysql user or not. If not, the chown command will correct it. Next, check that the owner permissions are set to read/write/execute. If not, use the chmod command to fix it up.

If your system is for testing, you can open it up simply by executing:
chmod 777 <directory name>

Don't do this on a live system, it gives read/write/execute permissions on the directory to everyone on the system.

There is another possibility that the ./ibdata1 file is already there and permissions may be incorrect as well. Simply follow the steps above replacing the directory name with the file name with the following exception:

leave off the execute permission (i.e.
chmod 666 <file name>
)

Depending on how many files mysqld needs to create, you may experience the same error for each file as they are created. Simply check the error log each time.

Hope this helps.
Aloha,
Doug

Hi Syskata,

Sounds like you're having a bad day . Don't worry, nothing personal.

Myself and George are trying to help you with the pieces of what you've posted. That is not yet enough to give you a step by step solution to your sql problem. Personally, I don't give people step by step instructions, but rather point them in the right direction to find the answer. That way they'll learn from the experience in case the problem happens again. From your posts, it sounds like you have experience on mysql and xp, but not so much on linux. I have lots of experience on linux and windows, but not so much on sql.

Since this post is 2 weeks old now, probably no one on the forum has experienced your specific problem. Also, since you are the only one at the machine, you are the eyes and ears for us. There is enough talent here to help you solve your problem. But you need to help us help you by providing as much detail on the problem, what you've tried and what you don't understand so we can clarify it.

Aloha,
Doug
