Tiger (OS) release announced, but will it include (Java) Tiger?

Tiger -- the operating system -- is being released on Friday, April 29...

http://www.apple.com/macosx/

On the above page, when you click on "Developer Tools," it says, "Built in to Mac OS X Tiger is the latest, certified release of the Java 2 Platform," which I take to mean Java 1.5 (aka Tiger)...

http://www.apple.com/macosx/developertools/

But when you then click on the "Java" link, it goes to a "Java 1.4.2 for Mac OS X" page...

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/java/

I'm assuming (hoping) that this particular page has not yet been updated, and that OS X Tiger will include Java Tiger.

Does anyone have some better information?

I just spoke with someone at an Apple store, who told me that the Tiger OS will initially ship with Java 1.4. However, a beta version of Java 1.5 will be available for download from the Apple Developer site on April 29.

Any idea how quickly these new OS releases will become bundled with Powerbooks sold through store.apple.com?

Actually, I'm going to an Apple store this weekend to talk to someone about this, because that's exactly what I want to do. (I'm still debating between PowerBook and iBook.) I'll post what I find...

If you buy an Apple today, you can qualify for their "up-to-date" program which will give you Tiger for $11.99 and free shipping.

It won't ship til the 29th though. Mine's currently on order...

I went to an Apple store, and here's what I found:

It will "probably be about a month" before new PowerBooks and iBooks ship with the Tiger OS installed. However, as of April 29, a disk for the new operating system will be included with new computers for the user to install.

With respect to Java, I got shuffled around to a few people, and the bottom line -- at least from the weekend staff -- is they don't know which version of Java will be included with the operating system. (But I prefer an honest "I don't know" to a guess.)

We'll see what happens on the 29th...
