Would Java 5.0 work with Virtual PC?

If I ran Virtual PC on a Mac, would I then be able to download and run the latest Windows version of Java? I realize this would not be an efficient configuration, but how "bad" would it be?

(I'm thinking of a G4 PowerBook or iBook, probably with the new Tiger OS.)

As far as I know, yes. Within the emulator you are running real Windows so I see no reason it would not. That said, simply because I don't see any reason doesn't mean there isn't one.

You might want to try searching through the forums at http://forums.macrumors.com/ and http://www.macosx.com/forums/ to see if someone's actually tried it.

Of course, if it works, that would not make it available outside of the Windows emulator.

I just noticed that Virtual PC requires 512 MB of RAM

, and many users complain about how monsterously slow it is. Perhaps because they have no RAM left for anything else? Anyway, this is looking like a bad solution -- especially with Virtual PC priced at over $200 (not including additional RAM).

It seems that Mac developers really do need to wait for Apple to deliver the latest Java, and trust that Apple will continue to do so in the future.

If Virtual PC were (a lot) less expensive, then I might consider it as a useful tool. But now that I have Java 5.0 running, I not too inclined.
