file type to application associations not sticking

Granted, this is only marginally related to Java, but with the forum not seeing too may question lately I thought I'd ask anyway.

The last system update (10.4.6) somehow caused my system to forget many associations of file types to applications. E.g., double-clcking a .java file would open Vim - no more. Normally, that could be restored easily, but not now. I can change the associated application for a single or multiple files, but whenever I click the "Change All..." button in the file info dialog in order to open all .java files with a particular app, the application setting reverts back to what it was before.

I have seen this before with 10.2.x, and it got fixed with 10.2.y (don't remember the specifics), but maybe there is a better way to fix this than install 10.4.7 or wait for some other update thereafter.

Is there some preference or cache I can/should delete? Thanks in advance for any clues.

I agree. Here's the link: http://zeroturnaround.com/jrebel - it saves me about five hours per week
