imac G4, 700MHz, Worth Upgrading?

Hi,

Ive recently "inherited" from a relative an iMac G4 (goose neck design). Having never owned a Mac before, Im interested in learning a bit about Mac OSX, and the Mac way of doing things.

Now I cant complain, I got it as a freebie, but the system that Ive got is a 700Mhz G4, with 256MB of PC100 memory. Im thinking about upgrading to 1GB, but is it worth my while doing this, or should I just save up some cash and buy a Mac Mini in a few months time, and give the iMac back to my relative?

Even with 256MB of memory, it seems speedy enough (ok it takes a few seconds to launch safari etc) but is this machine going to be able to handle the tasks I throw at it (hopefully some Java Development with Eclipse)?

Thanks in Advance,

Mark

Java IDEs love memory!

What you've got is a pretty nice machine that has many good years ahead of it. I'd consider the memory upgrade until such a time as the machine outlives its usefulness. I still have a G3 indigo iMac that's going strong.

On the other hand, if you feel you need the Intel architecture so you can dual boot or run virtual machines (personally I have no such need), a Mac Mini is a fine replacement.

fwiw - the mac i've used for the last 3 years (all the hf books) is a 667 g4... it's still working fine, but memory is key - and memory is cheap! if you're okay with a desktop machine, and it's got enough pixels for you then i'd say add half a gig or RAM and you're good to go
