Just to be clear - I LOVE Macs, but I also want a small, travel laptop. I'm hoping Apple will come through with a small laptop soon, but if they don't I might consider using OS X on non-Mac hardware
Has anyone had any experience with this "solution" ?
Eliminate fossil fuel subsidies. (If you're not on the edge, you're taking up too much room.)

Why don't you switch to Windows Vista? Give it a try Bates...
I talked to a guy at a coffee shop who told me that his IT department found a hack on the internet that allows them to run OS X on Dells with no problems. If I see him again, is there anything specific I should ask him?

I fall into the camp that believes that operating systems should...
Marc - I jumped the gun here - let's see what happens at MacWorld If Apple doesn't come through then I'd like to pursue your idea. Last winter I got a demo from a guy who had OS X working on his dell, so that would be the direction I'd like to head.
There are a lot of laptop users at the coffee shop I go to, and it seems at least 60% of these are Mac users. This is interesting, since Apple's market share just passed the 5% mark in 3rd quarter (Macworld 10/19/2006).

Supposedly Apple's laptop market share (in the U.S. at least) is more like 12% (as compared to the 5% overall market share).

fwiw - when we go to O'Reilly conferences I would say it's about 70% Mac laptops!

Are you suggesting that Mac users drink more coffee?

Well, I was observing that there seem to be Mac "pockets," without knowing how to explain it. But now that you mention it, maybe there is a demographic overlap between Mac users and coffee house patrons.
(Hmmm... I'm kind of kidding, but there might be something to that.)

Hey, I didnt think talk like a Pirate day was for a few more months yet!
Interesting article - it wasn't clear which Thinkpad was used, although they're probably all in a similar state. Most of the Thinkpads I've seen are around the same size as a Macbook - which wouldn't buy me anything, I'm hoping for a substantial reduction in size and weight - like in the 2 lb. neighborhood.
