Page download time calculation

Hello All
In my project my Project manager is asking to get an analysis of the download time of our sites page from different users. I am thinking of doing it in Javascript. I am thinking of getting the time request originated from client and putting it in a hidden field in each page say h1 and when the download is completed i will update the hidden field using javascript to the current time ( I will take care of time zone lag). can any one tell me how to do this. What events to capture in javascript.
This is my logic....
At any point of time there will be two hidden fields. One field will initialized by the server with some value. The next field is set to other value by the client once the form is submitted. The web server will compute the difference between the two times and give result.
Can anyone help me how which events to capture and how to proceed. I am learning java script recently. ( I am really weak in javascript)
Thanks a bunch
Chandar
