how to hide status bar and how to change button colors

hi all
in my page there are few hyper links showing some files paths. i want that these paths should not appear in the status bar.
please tell me how can these paths can be remove and some text appear in place of status bar.
like " welcoe to my web page"
second how to change the buttons colors in frontpage or in any other editor.
for examples the buttons appear in hotmail.com website.
