splitting table cell

is there any way to split the cell of a table without using another table in the cell ?i need to show something like this
A B
in a cell where A is left aligned and B is right aligned and i need mouseovers over both of them...might be pretty simple but i don't know..div doesn't work since it inserts a line after it...
