Nesting forms and tables

What are the rules for forms inside tables?
I am sure that one can have a table or tables in a form. Also, I am sure than one can have a form in a table cell.
I do not know, and have been unable to find out for sure, whether one can have a form within a table, which spans several cells of the table. For instance, <TABLE><TR><FORM><TD></TD><TD></TD></FORM></TR></TABLE>. Browsers seem to think that this is OK, but my HTML checker (JTidy) doesn't like it.

Betty Rubble? Well, I would go with Betty... but I'd be thinking of Wilma.

you can have the form inside a td tag or outside a table...
Earlier versions of bowsers would not of shown the table, modern day browsers will, but it is not good practice and not standards compliant.

In fact, I concluded this myself. Unfortunately, it meant a bit of duplication in the HTML.
It's a shame that a form can only span a single cell or a whole table, not just some cells, but I have to stick to the rules.
