can I do java script like the following

Could someone take a look at the the following?

out.println("<script>");      
out.println("alert"+"("+"hello this is a test"+")"+";");     
out.println("</script>"); %>

will this work? please let me know

You need to add quotes around the parens to make it a string.

out.println("alert"+"('"+"hello this is a test"+"')"+";");

Since you are in a JSP, you don't need to use a scriptlet to output static things (like <script> tags.)
