Window Problem

Try and make this brief as possible without sacrificing clarity...
-browser window running a perl script generates an HTML form
-submitting the form recalls the perl script but only after generating an Excel spreadsheet
-an in-line javascript is called which opens the Excel spreadsheet up in a new window
-if I set focus back to the parent window and create the spreadsheet again (each call generates a new spreadsheet but names it the same thing)
-how can I either
a) insert HTML in the child window to close on an onblur event or
b) replace the content in the window on each consecutive call

I know about parameter 4 of the window.open method which I have set but does nothing in this case since the state of the page is lost. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
