Meta-Refresh not functioning prperly

I have a webpage that refreshes automatically using the MEta-refresh tag. The refresh function works properly until I click a link in the webpage. The link will be opened in a new window. After the new window is opened the refresh operation is not happening in the parent window ? Can any one throw some light on it ?
