AJAX real-time push/pull model

I am reading some AJAX real-time push/pull model.

1. for real-time data, we could use javascript to set a timer, call AJAX function to refresh data based on timer. is it what we say "pull model" ?

2. How "push model" works ? In the server side, how a server knows which client should be sent(push) data ? each client has different IP address .

3. what about network traffic ? is the performance good ?

Thanks.

You can not push data to a computer with an Ajax model. You would need to use Applets or Flex/Flash to do that effectively.

With Ajax you need to do polling/COMET to get data which can be a heavy load on the server.
