Finding element with Lowest TabIndex

I want to find a lowest tabIndex element in a HTML form using JavaScript.

any help is appreciated.

Loop through the form elements to find the element with the lowest index. Sounds like a simple algorithm to me. What's got you flumoxed?

If tabIndex attribute is not defined explicitly, browser will assign according to the order it appears in the HTML.

To get the tabIndex, As you said I loop through the element in particular form and I used following function to find the tabindex

element.getAttribute('tabindex'); which is always returning zero for all the enabled elements in the form and for disabled fields it is returning -1.

Ah, I see what you are saying, I believe that the browser will assign the tabindex in the same order as they are defined.

correct. But I'm not getting the value assigned by the browser by using the method mentioned above.

The only way you will get a value for tabIndex is if you set it.
