GWT for complex apps or does it work well on small apps also
posted 8 years ago
I dont know much about GWT but have a bit of exposure to Ajax. I was wondering when I saw the Amazon page of the book it gave examples of apps like Google map etc. These are great apps, but my requirements are more to do with small plug-in like components like tables, grids, tree components which we have been able to implement using Ajax.
So, how would it help us(or me) the next time I have to develop a component if we use GWT instead of plain old Ajax. And also, whether the book covers topics concerning relatively small components apart from bigger apps like Google Maps
Google Maps is an AJAX application, but it doesnt use GWT. It was written way before GWT. Google is building other apps in GWT. This book does NOT cover google maps. I apologize if the amazon page gave you any wrong impressions. I will forward that to Packt so they can change it.
GWT gives you the ability to develop custom widgets and package them as modules and reuse them in other GWT applications. So you can build compound widgets using the builtin GWT widgets. The book has examples that show you how to build a flickr style editable label, a mac osx like calendar widget and a weather widget that uses the yahoo weather service to get info.
