window.open("reportCriteria.jsp", "mywindow","location=no,status=no,scrollbars=0,resizable=0, width=540,height=195");
but my IE 6 does not disable the status bar but disables the address bar
IE7 shows the status bar and a non-editable address bar

There is nothing you can do for IE7 because there are new security features that the user has to uncheck in the browser settings in order for you to hide certain parts of the browser window.
And for IE6, does it work better if you use 0 instead of no.
It is sorta covered in the
JavaRanch Style Guide
How can i hide the address bar?
disabling the address bar
hiding status bar
Disable Toolbar function doesn't work with IE7 and Firefox 3.5
Retriving the property of IE 7.0 from Security tab
