I agree with Ulf, I don't see how DWR has anything to do with applets. Although, I could see a situation where DWR uses an applet as it's AJAX engine, which would be a nifty way to do cross-domain AJAX... maybe I should suggest that to Joe
Now, if the question is really can DWR and applets co-exist, the answer is a definite yes, I have an application that does exactly that. But one isn't aware of the other in any way.
