Issue with Ajax Response XML

Hi,

my requirement is on click of a button, I make asynchronous request to a servlet which in turn sends an XML as response, which is then used to update the page without any reload.

when i click on the button most of the times i am able to populate fields through ajax, but at times ajax response xml gets printed on my screen.

thing is I am unable to replicate this scenario.

Had any one encountered this kind of a behaviour with ajax ?
It would be great if any one could help me out in identifying the problem that I had made.
