What do I need to do to be able to edit links in an existing gif file. I have been asked to changed to wording that is displayed in gif along with the links?

Do you mean that the text is part of the image? If so, you need an image editor like Photoshop or its ilk.

yes the text is part of the gif file, done by someone about 14 years ago, site owner wants to update text and links on gif. I well look into what you said, will have to find something for use in Linux in place of Phot-shop, thanks

"The Gimp" is the premier image editing application that runs on Linux.

Personally I like ImageJ for these purposes. It's written in Java, so it runs wherever I need it.
